Every year we try onions but can never get them to grow? What are we doing wrong. We have a beautiful garden with abundant beans, squash, tomatoes, cucumbers etc. When should you plant and what and how much fertilizer?
You didn’t specify whether you’re trying to grow bulb onions or green multiplying onions, but I’m going to assume you meant bulb onions. In our area we plant onions in October, in fact the 1015Y designation to Granex yellow refer to the planting date (Oct. 15) for south Texas. Onions grow best in full sunlight and well drained soils. But they can be planted October through December. I till the soil 8-10 inches deep and mix in a balanced fertilizer (10-10-10) or compost before putting in onion sets, and when you use sets be sure not to bury them too deep. Bury the root end and most of the set, but leave the top exposed. I plant the sets about two inches apart. Add an inch or two of mulch around the plants and keep moist but not soggy. Bulb onions are ready when the tops fall over. Onion sets planted Oct.-Dec. are usually ready May-July. One more thing: You mentioned that you have a lot of beans. Do not plant them near onions, onions do not like beans or peas as they negatively impact their growth.
